Tiny Dogs - The New Fashion Accessory?

Wednesday, February 4

Celebrities have made pocket pooches a fashion statement, piquing the interest of celebrity watchers everywhere. Sales of Chihuahuas and other tiny breeds have skyrocketed, along with the problems that usually follow with trendy pets.

We'll talk with Darlene Arden (left) Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and author of "Small Dogs, Big Hearts," about how to train and live successfully with these teacup breeds in a way that recognizes them as living beings with their own needs. Join us!

  • Little dogs live longer (12 years minimum). Are you ready to provide a lifetime of care?

  • Little dogs get cold more easily than larger dogs.

  • It takes up to a full year for a tiny dog to be reliably housetrained.

  • There's no official "teacup" designation. This is a marketing term, and if you hear it, run for the hills.

  • Tiny dogs need at least two meals per day.

  • Consider adopting an adult dog, whose final size you can see for yourself. This way, your dog won't end up at a shelter because "she got too big."

  • If you have children under 7, a tiny dog will require very close supervision.
